The Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan (HSAS) has launched a campaign calling for action to address Saskatchewan’s growing shortage of paramedics.
“Paramedics are essential health care professionals,” says HSAS President Karen Schmid. “They respond to medical emergencies and provide life saving care to the people of Saskatchewan. Right now, there are not enough paramedics to keep pace with the growing demand for emergency medical services.”
The Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan launched a campaign advocating for more resources to be directed towards addressing the shortage of Occupational Therapists in Saskatchewan.
“Occupational Therapists aid in the recovery from illness or injury and help people safely return to daily activities,” HSAS President Karen Schmid explains. “Unfortunately, right now there simply are not enough Occupational Therapists available to meet the needs of Saskatchewan patients, resulting in a strain on our healthcare system.”
The 2026 HSAS Annual Convention will take place on October 22 & 23, 2026 in Saskatoon at the Sheraton Cavalier Hotel.
This year’s theme is “Facing The Future.” Over the two days of Convention, guests and delegates will take part in the Union’s Annual General Meeting as well as hear about a variety of topics from our keynote speakers.
The Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan launched a campaign on May 1st advocating for more midwives in Saskatchewan.
“Midwives provide important care in our province and right now there are not enough midwives to meet the needs of the people of Saskatchewan.” HSAS President, Karen Schmid explains.
Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan (HSAS) met with SAHO on March 30, 2026, to discuss an interim solution to the funding for the HSAS members’ Extended Health & Enhanced Dental Benefits Plan.
Currently, the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) contributes to the Extended Health & Enhanced Dental Benefit Plan (EH & ED) for HSAS employees at a rate of 2.1% of regular pay. This rate has not increased in over 25 years and is the lowest employer contribution among healthcare unions. That rate is no longer adequate. As a result – if contribution levels are not increased, the plan is projected to be depleted as of July 1, 2026. At that point members could experience a 35% reduction to their EH & ED benefits.
Emergency teams and communities across Saskatchewan will soon benefit from enhanced lifesaving technology following the donation of five LUCAS 3.1 mechanical chest compression devices.
This year’s event took place at the Hotel Saskatchewan in Regina, under the theme “In Union There Is Strength.” Over two days, we heard from inspiring speakers, connected with members, unveiled new swag, hosted our Annual General Meeting, and received valuable updates from the Labour Relations team. It was a fantastic convention filled with learning, collaboration, and community.
The 2025 HSAS Annual Convention will take place on October 23rd & 24th, 2025 in Regina at the Hotel Saskatchewan.

Yesterday, on June 26th, a social media post reported an incident involving Regina paramedics. While responding to a call that originated from Regina Transit, Regina EMS paramedics were assaulted.
This is not an isolated incident. Our members have experienced and are experiencing increasing violence while attempting to provide assistance to those who need their care.
HSAS stands as an ally in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. This year, HSAS will be walking in the Pride Parade in Regina on June 14 and in Saskatoon on June 22. Come join us!

Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan (HSAS) opposes the decision made by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) to hire Medavie West, a private company, to provide Mobile Detox Services in communities such as Île-à-la-Crosse, Beauval, Buffalo Narrows, and La Loche.

HSAS is proud to support the Regina Food Bank and Learning Centre with a $10,000 donation as part of the Cold Weather, Warm Hearts donation campaign. Cold Weather, Warm Hearts is a partnership between HSAS and the Regina Food Bank to help bring in donations during the cold winter months after Christmas, when seasonal giving typically winds down.
