Research Officer – Regina
The Position
Located in Regina and reporting to the Associate Executive Director – Labour Relations, the Research Officer supports union advocacy by researching workplace and labour issues to support effective union communications, labour relations strategy, and informed decision-making. Duties and responsibilities include:
- Conducts research on labour relations, collective agreements, legislation, arbitration awards, policy developments, and comparable practices in other unions, jurisdictions, or sectors.
- Gathers, synthesizes, and summarizes information from diverse sources such as legal decisions, academic research, media, government reports, union publications, employer data.
- Prepares clear, concise research briefs that both support union positions and identify risks, counter-arguments, and weaknesses.
- Maintains organized research files, databases, and reference materials to support ongoing and future work.
- Provides research support to labour relations staff in preparation for bargaining, grievances, arbitrations, consultations, and so forth.
- Assists with jurisdictional and comparator research – wages, classifications, workload, benefits, staffing models, etc.
- Supports union communications by researching background information, facts, and data for member communications, public messaging, briefing notes, and reports.
- Monitors relevant media, policy announcements, and public discourse for emerging issues affecting members.
- Works collaboratively with labour relations, communications, and other staff while managing assigned projects independently.
- Responds to research requests with strong attention to timelines, accuracy, and relevance.
- Exercises discretion and confidentiality when handling sensitive labour relations and organizational information.
Compensation: Competitive compensation based on qualifications.
Position: Full-Time.
Qualifications:
- Typically, 2-5 years of relevant experience in research, policy analysis, communications, labour relations, advocacy, or a union/non-profit/government environment.
- Strong understanding of the labour movement, unions, and collective bargaining principles (through education, work experience, or lived involvement).
- Demonstrated experience conducting independent research and producing written summaries or briefs for decision-makers.
- Highly curious, resourceful, and persistent in seeking out information and verifying sources.
- Able to work independently with minimal direction while balancing multiple priorities.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Sound judgment, discretion, and comfort handling sensitive information.
