HSAS & La Ronge EMS Bargaining Update #5

To All HSAS Members employed at La Ronge EMS:
 
Your Negotiating Committee met with the Employer’s group on April 14, 2021.  Including the most recent meeting, the parties have met 15 times over the past year.

The bargaining process itself began prior to commencing negotiations with the Employer when your Union put a call out for bargaining committee members and formed a committee of the members who volunteered.  Your Union also conducted a bargaining survey, which provided members with the opportunity to identify a number of priority concerns for this round of negotiations. 
 
Progress has been made on many of the key issues that have been brought to the table on your behalf.  We have signed off on language that will:
 

  • Increase the boot/clothing allowance
  • Clearly identify Sick and Vacation banks on paystubs
  • Increase Sick Leave accumulation from 1.25 days to 1.5 days
  • Update provisions regarding Maternity/Parental/Adoption Leaves -reducing the EI waiting period and increasing the leaves to 18 months
  • Add a new paid Interpersonal Violence Leave. 
  • Indicate that probation can only be extended by mutual agreement
  • Update the Northern Allowance
  • Bring standby rates in line with the provincial HSAS/SAHO agreement
  • Change the wording of “Paternity Leave” to “Parental Leave”

Topics still in discussion include:
 

  • Pension:  Both the union and management have tabled proposals for a pension plan and we are continuing discussion on this topic.
  • Pension and benefit plan contributions
  • Pro-rata hours required for determining benefit levels
  • Sick leave for other than full-time members: Management has signalled willingness to work with the union on this issue.
  • Increased guaranteed hours of work for FT employees (an employer proposal)

We are scheduled to meet at the table again on April 21, and we will keep members updated as we progress toward reaching a tentative agreement.

Your Negotiating Committee has met three times with management via Zoom – on May 21, July 23 and August 12, 2020. At each of those sessions we brought forward the core issue of pension to the table, along with a focused list of other proposals.

The results of the La Ronge EMS Collective Agreement extension vote are in.  HSAS members did not approve a one-year extension to the term of the current Collective Agreement.
